I was a street.
Cascading months and the end to an age
we began to count...
I passed you in the driving rain
you looked me in the eye, then back at the sidewalk
back at the traffic before you crossed
back across the small boulevard that we shared that night
the night of rain
May, the weather was like a movie
a storm in the middle of heaven
too heavy, for the summer I had scripted
I waited on warm winds and the opportunity to ditch my jacket
Instead I found the chill that belonged to autumn
The rain ran south, down the hill like a river
seeming to pick up speed at each sidewalk square
I looked back for you, no luck
after a deep breath that shown like cigar smoke
I crossed too, hoping to find you again
In the light of the streetlamps
you were a priestess in the face of the glorifying end
you seemed collected and sure
but I see what they do not
Deep eyes of onyx
shown like faults in the loneliest railroad ties
Empty and oh so righteous
like a rock that flirts with the waves
i was a street
and you were a gaze
we began to count...
